Change for Society TodayBy Alyssa Rose
America is perceived to be a much more open-minded society than what we used to be, correct? People are allowed to choose their partners in life (of either gender), and there seems to be less prejudice towards other races.
What of religion? It has been my experience that quite a few people are extremely close-minded towards other people's beliefs. The people themselves are not always attacked, but other beliefs are. Why is this?
Someone asked me once to offer proof in my religion. I find this to be an extremely contradictory request. There is no proof in any religion. Religion is a set of beliefs, and if beliefs coulod be proven true, they wouldn't be beliefs any longer. Beliefs would cease to be what they are to move onto fact. Thus, if someone tells me the Bible or other religious books are proof in the religion, they are speaking a false statement. It cannot be proven the Bible is the word of God. It can only be proven His followers wrote it.
Since these beliefs can never be proven true until we're all dead, there is simply no point in attacking another person's beliefs. My beliefs could be wrong, and I am the first one willing to admit this. However, I also do not tell other people their beliefs are wrong. I don't believe in them, but they could be right.
There also seems to be a religious war going on at the moment. In my perception, it resembles a cold war on the brink on something. Each attack causes a defensive shield that often rebounds in another attack. It has caused a mockery which has swayed several parts of society's views. This mockery causes hate and blinds people to more prejudice.
So, how have we changed? We're no longer physically attacking people as much because we believe other people are wrong. We're also mentally attacking people more. I don't need it preached to me that my religion is wrong. Two friends once told me, "We love you, but you're believing in the wrong thing." This is supposed to convert me, how? I'm not ignorant of other religions, and I chose the one that fit me best. I'm not going to sit down and depend my religious beliefs into the ground. I shouldn't have to, and neither should anyone else. © Alyssa Rose |
